User Interface

The user interface is comprised of a 2 x 6 push button keypad mounted on the face of the guitar, a liquid crystal display located along the top edge of the guitar, and a single-button footswitch that plugs into the rear of the Power Supply.

The LCD displays menus, tuning's, selections, and prompts for action. The push buttons are used to navigate the menus, make tuning changes, edit settings, and perform the various operations of the system. The foot switch is programmed in the edit mode and allows the artist to change tuning hands-free.

With the single press of a button or foot switch, the computer commands the motors to move the strings to the new tuning. It’s simple, fast and accurate.
The motors are synchronized to start and stop at the same time during tuning changes creating a “ proportional droning ” that can be used as an effect in a song or composition.
The motors change the tensions of the strings and they stop accurately at the new tuning. The system is able to hit the new tuning right on because the system compensates for string stretch and changes in the shape of the neck as the strings change tension.

Touch Up at Tuning

With the Performer™ you can “Touch Up” your tunings by simply pressing a button and strumming the strings. Whether you hear a string that is out of tune or just want to be confident that you are in perfect pitch, the Touch Up process is quick and easy. You press the TCH button and give the strings a single strum. In 3-4 seconds the system reads the string frequencies and the motors make a quick move to correct the strings.
Touch Up is a “snapshot” in time, so the current state of temperature and humidity are automatically considered in the frequency correction.
The system is somewhat artificially intelligent and that it learns from each Touch Up and applies what it learned to the next Touch Up. As a result, repetitive Touch Ups force the strings to converge closer at the requested note. In other words, the longer you play it the better it gets!

Placeholder imageTouch Up at STD

The “Touch Up at STD” feature allows the system to touch up every tuning in the guitar in a single strum. This creates major advantages for the musician. For example, when the ambient temperature increases during a show, the string tensions slightly increase causing the strings to drift sharply. Since every tuning in the guitar is affected by the temperature rise, and every tuning in the guitar is maintained relative to Standard Tuning, a single Touch Up at Standard Tuning corrects every tuning in the guitar’ s libraries with a single strum.
This is how “Touch Up at STD” works. The first time Touch Up is requested on an alternate tuning, the system moves to Standard Tuning and requests a Touch Up and then moves to the alternate tuning and requests a second Touch Up. The system determines the relative distance between the tunings and applies corrections each time the alternate tuning is requested in the future. These corrections are updated each time “Touch Up at STD” is done. Using these methods, the state of tuning improves each time a touch up is done.
If Touch Up at STD is satisfied in a given tuning window, the system will not need to satisfy the condition again until the library is exited or system power is cycled. In other words, the system will not ask for two touch ups in any window where the Touch Up at STD is currently satisfied.

The Performer™includes editing tools that provide the ability to create tunings on the fly, copy tunings into the clipboard, store tunings in the Artist Library and edit their names and parameters.

Placeholder imageString Align & Tension Adjust

String Align and Tension Adjust are automated maintenance procedures used to align the string tensions with the tune arm positions and their corresponding software positions. The LCD prompts guide the musician throughout the routine, and the on board LCD tuner makes it quick and easy to align the strings.
When String Align is executed, the system moves the tuning arms to their Standard Tuning positions and prompts for a strum. Using the information obtained from the strum, the system will either issue a clean bill of health or direct the musician to unlock and adjust the appropriate strings.
String Align should be performed before every live show or recording session, when replacing strings, and following shipping or long periods of storage.

Replacing strings on the Performer™ is fast and painless. The proper string gauges are displayed on the LCD during system startup. The string balls slip into the tail piece and the strings are terminated at the head stock much like a normal guitar. After string(s) are replaced, String Align is performed to bring the system into perfect alignment.
